LOS ANGELES, Monday, July 23rd -
Activists convened at 11 AM on the corner of Le Conte and Westwood to participate in an on-campus march and protest against the continuing use of primates in barbaric and scientifically fraudulent experiments that - as does all vivisection - do nothing but subject animals to gratuitous torture and retard true progress in human medicine. Activists stood at the intersection for a while displaying signs, handing out leaflets, and conversing with students and passers-by about the issues. Vivisection (animal experimentation) siphons billions of taxpayer dollars away from what could and should be legitimate scientific inquiry into worthy human health concerns via not only the scores of alternatives now available, but also with the assistance of appropriate clinical, epidemiological, and demographic studies. For example, UCLA addicts monkeys to crystal meth (makes "tweakers" out of macaques) instead of investigating the psychosocial parameters that predispose humans to substance abuse. One researcher, Arthur Rosenbaum - recent recipient of underground activity by the Animal Liberation Brigade - studies strabismus ("crossed eyes"), a common and self-limiting condition for which a simple and effective operation has already been known and in use for decades. Activists began their demonstration on campus with a march to the Chancellor's Office. They entered the building, climbed the stairs, and - with media present - took Norman Abrams to task for overseeing and promoting the frankenscience of vivisection at UCLA. Chanting "Shame!" repeatedly, the activists were threatened with arrest by Captain Adams (university police) for noise disturbance. One of the demonstrators wanted to know if the screams of the monkeys violated the noise ordinance and initiated a chant of, "Answer the question! Answer the question" Subsequently continuing with the march, activists visited all the buildings housing the research laboratories. One activist spoke in the presence of media about how vivisection is both an animal and human rights issue. Animals have the right not to be tortured and humans have the right to accurate and swift medical advancement. She described the primate experiments involving crystal meth addiction, water deprivation, and strabismus. She stated that she, herself, was born with the latter sixty years ago for which an uncomplicated and successful surgical technique at age four conferred normal appearance and function. Activists also talked about psychopathology - the enjoyment of torturing other sentient beings and a heritable human malady irremediable by any known therapeutic modality. After about two hours of chanting and educating the public, the demonstrators returned to the corner of Le Conte and Westwood and departed. The following day, UCLA held a Press Conference at which they were obviously desperate to do "damage control" and shamefully stated their support for, confidence in, and intention of continuing their primate research. Well, the activists will continue, too - to expose the immorality and scientific invalidity of the barbarous, archaic, and deceptive practice known as vivisection. |
